Our history

Mogatec’s history is defined by technological innovation, entrepreneurial adaptability and the continuous expansion of its engineering and manufacturing capabilities. From strong regional roots, the company has evolved into an internationally operating OEM partner with a clear focus on industrialization and series production.
In the facilities of the former Venusberg fine spinning mill, Mechanische Werkstätten GmbH, Metall- und Holzverarbeitung Venusberg is founded by Mr. Müller and Mr. Sander. Immediately after the Second World War, the company manufactures urgently needed hand carts for private households using reclaimed wood and metal. One of the founders also develops hand drills and manual drill braces for the Leipzig Trade Fair.
In addition to the Type 1 hand drill, a two-speed hand drill is introduced into production.
Production continues to grow. The company’s first grinding machines are exported to China.
The company increasingly focuses on the production of hand tools, while wood processing is discontinued entirely.
The company is renamed Mechanische Werkstätten Venusberg GmbH, Metallverarbeitung (Ehrenfriedersdorf, Ore Mountains) and relocates to the former Friedel hosiery factory in Ehrenfriedersdorf.
As the only manufacturer of hand drills and grinding machines in the former GDR, the business is reorganized as Herbert Müller KG, Metallverarbeitung (Ehrenfriedersdorf, Ore Mountains). The former Mechanische Werkstätten Venusberg GmbH is dissolved.
The company is converted into the state-owned enterprise VEB Mechanik Ehrenfriedersdorf.
The first hedge trimmer with a 360 W motor is launched and exported to West Germany through IKRA.
The company is taken over by the Treuhand Trust Agency.
Reinhard H. Jachmann, owner of IKRA GmbH, establishes MOGATEC GmbH & Co. in Ehrenfriedersdorf with an initial workforce of 15 employees. Production begins with hedge trimmers, followed shortly afterwards by chainsaws.
The former sewing facility of the Panther shoe factory becomes the company’s new production site. Just one year after the acquisition, annual revenue reaches DM 5 million.
The product portfolio expands as the growing workforce begins manufacturing modern grass trimmers.
A second production facility is established in Hilmersdorf through the acquisition of another section of the former Panther shoe factory, significantly increasing production capacity.
The Hilmersdorf facility is expanded with a 600 m² warehouse.
The acquisition of the former DKK Scharfenstein compressor plant in Grießbach marks the beginning of the gradual relocation of all business operations.
The company is renamed MOGATEC Moderne Gartentechnik GmbH.
Mogatec acquires the Tonino Lamborghini licence and successfully launches the premium garden equipment product line under this renowned brand.
The Flexo Trim product line is successfully introduced to the market.
The final business unit, component manufacturing, is relocated from Ehrenfriedersdorf to Drebach.
The launch of the Ultralight hedge trimmer marks the beginning of a new generation of products.
Continued growth leads to the relocation of the service and repair department back to Ehrenfriedersdorf.
By this time, MOGATEC Moderne Gartentechnik GmbH has grown to an average workforce of 215 employees and annual revenue of approximately €44 million.
In June, Mogatec celebrates its 25th anniversary.
Quality and energy efficiency become strategic priorities as Mogatec achieves ISO 50001 certification, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable operations.

Large-scale photovoltaic (PV) systems are commissioned to generate renewable electricity, making an important contribution to climate protection while also supplying energy for the company’s vehicle fleet.

At the same time, Mogatec expands its capabilities by introducing automated wire harness assembly using advanced wire cutting and stripping technology. The company manufactures prototype batches, individual cable assemblies and customised large-scale solutions tailored to specific customer requirements.

Mogatec also opens its new Testing Centre, featuring comprehensive mechanical and technological testing capabilities. Climate-controlled testing chambers enable extensive validation of both proprietary developments and customer products throughout the entire product development process. This investment strengthens the company’s engineering services and significantly expands its quality assurance capabilities.

The company is renamed Mogatec GmbH. Investments in a modern in-house testing centre, strong regional partnerships and pioneering e-mobility projects create the foundation for expanding into new business areas beyond traditional garden equipment manufacturing.

Following almost 30 years of close cooperation, the family-owned company STIHL acquires 100% ownership of Mogatec GmbH in February 2024.

This strategic partnership positions Mogatec for long-term growth while strengthening STIHL’s global engineering and manufacturing network in Saxony. Mogatec continues to operate as an independent company under the leadership of Managing Directors Tobias Wetzel and Alexander Gränitz at its headquarters in Drebach.

The completion of the new Engineering Centre in Drebach at the end of the year marks another significant milestone in Mogatec’s continued development and strengthens its engineering and industrialization capabilities for the future.
